July 2005

6th Annual National Storytelling Week
28th January – 4th February 2006

Over 700 nationwide storytelling events and performances were organised this year for National Storytelling Week in Schools, Arts Centres, Museums, Libraries, Theatres, Book Shops, Storytelling Clubs, Retirement Homes, Pubs, and a London shop window! Once again there was great support from BBC National Radio and Local Radio Stations around the country, and also the Local and National Press.

Over 480 Schools, Ethnic Educational Centres, Libraries, Museums and Art Galleries applied for The National Storytelling Week Guide we published last year. This will be available again . Email copies will be free.

For National Storytelling Week 2006 – our 6th year – we aim to involve as diverse an array of ethnic traditions in the British Isles

We know that storytelling stretches from its simplest application in the nursery right through to the personal stories and bereavement aids in hospitals, strengthening communication in the business sphere, and as an aid to learning in education. There are also professional storytellers working with prisoners to try and connect them back with their families.

We are informing you early because we would like to ask as many people as possible to join in the celebration of one of the oldest traditions of the world! The more organisations that take part, the more interesting the week will be! Call The Society for Storytelling now for further information, or if you would like be involved!!

For further information and to book your place, please contact The Building Exploratory on 020 7275 8555 or mail@buildingexploratory.org.uk.

This interactive workshop is suitable for family groups of all ages, though please note that children and young people under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the visit.

We are located on the 2nd Floor of the Professional Development Centre, on the corner of Queensbridge Road and Albion Drive, Hackney, London E8 4ET.

The Building Exploratory's mission - increasing awareness of the opportunities presented by the places people live - is primarily achieved by fostering a sense of belonging and pride of place using history and heritage as key themes. We help people discover the secrets of their local area and gain a better understanding of the buildings and spaces that surround them.

From Giles Abbott:
28th January, I will be at the Building Exploratory, Hackney, running a family workshop, telling stories linked, thematically, to the built environment. I shall also be eliciting ideas from the audience in a storymaking exploration of this fascinating resoure. Session runs 10:30-12:30 at the Building Exploratory, which, according to my contact, is "is the door nearest to Queensbridge Road, then up a LOT of steps", Hackney, London E8 4ET. And it's FREE!

You can also download a trail that takes you on a journey around the Twentieth Century and British Galleries at the V&A where you will explore two eras of style and learn the stories behind the exhibits you encounter. Nottingham Scouts

Hi there this Pete Davis of the storytellers of Nottingham. Having failed to get a project going with the city libraries we have been asked by the Nottingham Boy Scouts to improve their campfire storytelling and so that is what we will do. we are beginning with the kids and then training the leaders. It seems that their skills in entertaining themselves around the campfire are to be brushed up and storytelling is just the thing. So we will dyb dyb dob etc.

Through Week Colin King

Storytelling week I shall be working in Curdworth Primary School (North Warwickshire) with years 5/6 and reception class.  They are holding a "diversity week" so my stories will be from different cultures, namely Jamaica, Mexico and Ireland.  On Thursday of this week I shall be giving a talk on "Creative Storytelling for young children"  to child minders at Coleshill library organised by the North Warwickshire Provider Development Service.

Colin King

Through Week Valuing Diversity Programme

Since National Storytelling Week is as much about the work place as the fireplace, I'll once again be turning mine into a telling place.

In my role as Equality and Diversity Training Officer for Sheffield Council, I'll be telling Nasruddin Stories as part of the Valuing Diversity Programme I run each week for council staff.

The programme looks at diversity in all its guises and how practical it is to make equality and inclusion real things. The day encourages those who think they don't know to discover how much they do, and challenges those who think they do to admit just how much they don't!

Yours Tellingly

28 January - 04 February 2006 National Storytelling Week at the Royal Armouries Museum

The Royal Armouries, Leeds is taking part in the 6th National Storytelling week, giving visitors the opportunity to join in, relive history and learn from the many fantastic stories being told.

The week long programme, at the museum, is one of 700 nationwide storytelling events and performances organised for National Storytelling Week. The events are held in schools, arts centres, museums, libraries, theatres and book shops.

Interpreters at The Royal Armouries will be telling a series of collection related stories, which will include:

“HOW THE GUN CAME TO JAPAN”
The extraordinary tale of a Japanese Swordsmith’s first encounter with Europeans and their firearms.

SMUGGLERS 1730 - 1820
During the 18th century, taxes were so high that bands of rebels turned to a new crime: smuggling. Hear how entire communities came to rely on these desperate and lawless men.

“TIRANT LO BLANC”
A young fifteenth century knight tells of his skilful and daring exploits during a Tournament.

MEDIEVAL HUNTRESS: 1490
Venture into a mythological world in J.R.R Tolkien’s translation of Sir Gawain with a journey into the royal forests of Britain, where wild boar and deer tread warily.

MOWGLI AND SHERE KHAN
How Mowgli defeated his life long adversary, the terrifying tiger, Shere Khan.

Each story is told in a different style, from the more traditional  'Jackanory' reading, to full performance.

STORIES FROM THE FLOOR
A very popular and great way to kick off the new year by listening to stories from the very talented bunch of tellers from the Calder Valley. Or, this is an opportunity for you to tell the story that you have been dying to tell for ages. If you just want to listen that is fine. You never know what you may hear, stories of heroes and heroines, strange creatures, devils and maybe just ordinary people. A good story, well told is just the thing to warm up a cold, misty January night.
Look forward to seeing you!

7th February Story Fair Day - Southdown Junior School

Tony Aylwin - Story Fair Day in SOUTHDOWN JUNIOR SCHOOL, Newhaven, East Sussex

Saturday, 5th. February Story Hat Ring

The Story Hat Ring will celebrate National Storytelling Week with a Storytelling Drop-in in the Warren Room of East Preston's Village Hall, East Preston, West Sussex, between 2:30pm - 4:30pm.

The Story Hat Ring is a group of 4 ‘older’ folk who meet in each other’s homes once a month to tell stories old and new. We began in 2002 following a course that two of us attended given by Pat Bowen, an ex-colleague of mine.

At present we perform publicly twice a year; once at the village Summer Festival, with wine and strawberries and once at Christmas, with mulled wine and mince pies. We have also given performances in Worthing and at the Arundel Festival.

There is an invitation for stories from the floor on each of our public events which is usually taken up by 3 or more people.

The numbers in the village audience started off at about 12 and is now in excess of 30.

Our entry fee usually covers our costs and any extra is donated to that year’s village charity at the end of the summer festival. We all enjoy the experiences and hope that it is the tales that draw in the audience rather than the fare.

We each have different styles of presentation and tell different types of stories from Philippa's ghost tales that she has written to my adaptations of folk myths and legends. We do not travel very far from Sussex because of personal commitments ( Forrest Row is the furthest we have been.)

For the  Drop–In  we plan to meet and to welcome visitors to join our ring (circle) to hear a story and if they wish, to tell a tale. We will provide light refreshments. Information about our future meetings will be available at the Drop-In and we hope that others will want to join our monthly meets.

Throughout NSW Mike O'Leary

Mike is celebrating the rest (i.e. not 3rd and 4th February) of National Storytelling Week by being storyteller in residence at Treloar College in Alton, Hampshire. For further details please see www.michaelolearystoryteller.com

Bardic Mysteries Weekend

Explore the path of the bard & the festival and symbolism of Imbolc in the beautiful city of hot springs dedicated to the Celtic Goddess Sulis.

with Robin Williamson (of legendary folk group The Incredible String Band) master harper and storyteller, author of The Wise and Foolish Tongue, & Celtic Bards, Celtic Druids (with RJ Stewart)

and Kevan Manwaring MA, winner of the Bardic Chair of Caer Badon, storyteller, creative writing teacher & author of The Long Woman and The Bardic Handbook (due May 2006 from Gothic Image Publications)

The ancient wisdom of Britain and the Isles remains now as it always was and will be: in Annwn – the magical Otherworld beside us everyday, beneath the sea, below the hill, round the next turning, betwixt every between, as close to us as we are to ourselves. But how to access it? This workshop with Robin Williamson (supported by Kevan) explores the heart of the Celtic tradition: the acquisition of inspiration. The workshop deals with aspects of the bardic heritage – the sacred directions, the bardic scales, as well as practical work with key bardic stories and their performance meaning and function. Bring pen, paper, stories, poems, songs and an instrument if you wish.
