8th Annual National Storytelling Week 26th January – 2nd February 2008

National Storytelling Week 2007 – our 7th year proved to be the most successful Festival since it began in 2000!

Over 1,040 nationwide storytelling events and performances were organised this year for National Storytelling Week. In Schools, Arts Centres, Libraries, Theatres, Pubs, Book Shops, Storytelling Clubs, Retirement Homes, The North Tyneside Disability Forum and Lakeside Shopping Centre. Museums like the V & A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, London; The Downland Museum, Oxfordshire; Stockwood Park Museum, Luton, Rockingham Castle, Leicestershire, Armley Mills Industrial Museum, Leeds as well as the museums in Kirklees. Storytelling reached out both high and low to cover the depths of the National Marine Aquarium, and events amongst members of The Salvation Army. Sessions were also held in a number of prisons.

Over 780 Schools, Ethnic Education Centres, Libraries, Museums and Art Galleries took part. 400-plus copies of The Society for Storytelling Guide to National Storytelling Week were requested by email or post.

The Directors of the SfS feel proud of the work carried out by the Society’s members in the sharing of this most ancient of communication experiences in so many venues and touching so many ages and ability groups.

We know that storytelling stretches from its simplest application in the nursery right through to personal stories and bereavement aids in hospitals, strengthening communication in the business sphere, and as an aid to learning in education. In its sharing between teller and listener it gives and receives time, it empowers, it creates and feeds the imagination from one generation to the next.

During National Storytelling Week 2007 and its coat-tales period of four days either side, we truly did cover the length and breadth of the country.

Call The Society for Storytelling now for further information or if you would like be involved!!

We publish The National Storytelling Week Guide which is available by emailing the Society at sfs@fairbruk.demon.co.uk .

Monday 29th January to Friday 2 February Cambridge Storytellers on the air

Cambridge Storytellers are taking to the airwaves for National Storytelling Week! For 209radio we are creating a magnificent improvised story using ideas from listeners, family, friends, and anyone in the storytelling community.

This is how it works: You phone or email in your ideas and suggestions for places, people, or mysterious objects. We pick your ideas out of a hat and magically, at a moment's notice, transform them into a story. The story will grow, day by day, as each teller adds on to the previous day's story.

209radio is the new Community Radio Station for Cambridge. It will be launched on FM this summer but for now you can listen to it online at www.209radio.co.uk. Tune into our story from 5.50 to 5.55 each evening from Monday 29th January to Friday 2 February.

Email your ideas to:

Saturday 27th January The Streets of Storyville

10:30am – 12:30pm
Family session, all ages

Magic away those winter blues – celebrate National Storytelling Week with a FREE family session at the Building Exploratory this January!

Our exhibition becomes Storyville for a day, and you’ll get to search behind doors, through windows and even under the street to find the tales that are hidden there. Storyteller Lizzie Lewendon will help you to build the stories and there will even be a chance to turn them into a song. Come and join in – make your morning musical, creative and fun!

Booking is essential as places are limited. For further information or to reserve your place, contact The Building Exploratory on 020 7275 8555 or mail@buildingexploratory.org.uk.

Please note that children and young people under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the visit.

We are located on the 2nd Floor of the Professional Development Centre, on the corner of Queensbridge Road & Albion Drive, Hackney, London E8 4ET. Please note that there is currently no lift in the building.

Lizzie Lewendon’s website can be found at www.magicalmusicaltales.co.uk

The Building Exploratory’s mission - increasing awareness of the opportunities presented by the places people live - is primarily achieved by fostering a sense of belonging and pride of place using history and heritage as key themes. We help people discover the secrets of their local area and gain a better understanding of the buildings and spaces that surround them.

My contact says she thinks there may be some more library dates in the Borough of Richmond for NSW Week (and she contacted me because it was NSW Week - congratulations SfS!) but nothing confirmed yet. Thursday 1 February 2007 Joy of Reading

I am writing from The University of Hertfordshire. I would like to add our forthcoming event, The Joy of Reading on Thursday 1 February 2007, to The National Story Telling Week Guide, as a way of joining the celebrations and being part of this festival.

The Joy of Reading is now in its third year and continues to be highly successful, inspiring children and student teachers in the joys of reading, writing and poetry. Our featured author for 2007 is Anne Fine (who follows Michael Morpurgo in 2005 and Michael Rosen in 2006.) The event is divided into three parts; a morning talk to school children from the Hatfield Consortium; the ever popular book signing session and an afternoon lecture to the University’s trainee teachers from the School of Education.

10.00am                       Talk and Question Time with school children (closed event as we are fully booked)
11.00am                       Book signing – Anne Fine (closed event as we are fully booked)
1.00pm                        Lecture and discussion for Trainee Teachers (open event as we have spaces available for teachers in training)

To confirm only the 1.00pm lecture and discussion is open to other trainee teachers and institutions, as morning events are fully booked.

Please let me know if you require any further information. I look forward to hearing from you.

Various Northamptonshire schools

Here are some of the NSW activities in Northamptonshire schools:

One cluster's annual Year 6/7 liaison initiative of "Excite to Write" has been changed to "Excel to Tell", with a celebratory event in July.   NSW is a key focal point for the project - Chris Corps is telling in Culworth Primary, Chacombe Primary and Chenderit Secondary; Joanne Blake to pupils from Greatworth, Farthinghoe, Kings Sutton, Aston Le Walls, Boddington and Chipping Warden primaries; Adam Guillain to Middleton Cheney Primary.

I am telling in Alfred Street Junior School, Rushden and in Studfall Junior School, Corby.

Northampton Excellence Cluster is funding a school year-long project entitled "Journeys". The teachers involved have already attended a storytelling workshop and have extended their pupils' experience of hearing and telling stories. In the week preceding NSW, Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden will tell "The Odyssey" to an audience of adults and 12+s at Mereway Community College on Mon Jan 22nd (closed event). Over the next two days, Year 5 and 6 pupils of primary schools in the Mereway cluster (The Abbey, Briar Hill, East Hunsbury, Hunsbury Park, Queen Eleanor and Simon de Senlis Primary Schools) will hear Hugh and Daniel tell an appropriate version, each session lasting approximately 2 hours. The intention is for the pupils then to enhance their own skills and to share stories with a range of audiences during NSW. Excellent resources are available to support the work on "The Odyssey", including Hugh and Daniel's recently published version from Barefoot Books and materials from the Cambridge Schools Classics Project.
I will also be telling in St Lawrence Junior School, Towcester.
Best wishes
Dave Blake

26th Jan - 20th March GALA GETS FILMMAKERS ONTO BIG SCREEN

GALA GETS FILMMAKERS ONTO BIG SCREEN
Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a series of free Digital Storytelling workshops are being held across the County Durham region.

The team at the Gala in Durham are inviting budding filmmakers to tell their story and see their work on the Gala’s big screen.

Digital Storytelling is an exciting new art form that combines one of the oldest skills - the art of storytelling - with the imaginative use of new technology.

The project is called ‘Durham Digital Stories’ and members of the local community will be helped to create short films (on computers) about the things that are important to them in their lives. The series of workshops will be held in a number of County Durham venues and will be led by Barrie Stephenson, who has been involved in similar projects since 2001.

Participants can provide their own images to accompany their stories - these can be old photographs, snippets of video-tape or any other material that can be digitally captured and scanned.

Supported by the BBC, the series of workshops will culminate in a screening of each film in April 2007 at the Gala Cinema and the collection of digital stories are to be published on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/tees

The presentations giving further information on the project will be held at the following venues and are open to anyone with an interest in producing a digital story of their own.

Friday 26 Jan Gala Theatre, Durham 6pm
Friday 2 Feb Bishop Auckland Town Hall 6pm
Tues 20 Feb Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre 6pm
Thurs 1 March Seaham Dawdon Youth and Community Centre 6pm
Tues 20 March Stanley Lamplight Arts Centre 6pm

29th Jan - 2nd Feb Halton

In the past two years Halton has run two very successful events to celebrate National Story Telling Week. The activities have involved both educational and community events led by national and internationally acclaimed story tellers focussed on Widnes and Halton Lea libraries. Indeed, the link between the Library Service and the Children and Young People?s Directorate in promoting story telling is noted as an example of good practice.

This year, to sustain and build on past successes, the activities are for the first time involving children in telling stories. As part of Halton?s Oracy Project teachers, pupils from six schools have been working with the Primary Consultant Team and Story tellers Nick Hennessey, Graham Langley, Katrice Horsley and Honor Giles. Graham, Katrice and Honor have worked in Halton successfully with both children and adults over the past two years. Nick has worked in Liverpool on a similar project and provided a stimulating days training for teachers from the participating schools.

This is an exhibition of 4 pieces of artwork created by adults with learning disabilities who attend Sea View Centre in Parkstone.

The work is the result of a collaboration between art and communication opportunities at Sea View Centre.

The story was created by people in the communication group and was then translated into 3D images by people in the art group.

We wanted to be involved in National Storytelling Week and because most of the people attending the centre have very limited understanding of the written word, the visual image is the best way to record and revisit a story.

We hope that you enjoy the work

27th January - 3rd February Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery

Please find details below of the events that Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is running to celebrate National Storytelling Week:

20th January - 15th September Teens share their memories at North Somerset Museum

A ground-breaking exhibition opens on 20 January at North Somerset Museum. “Then and Now, Teens through the time warp” will appeal to all ages as it shows what children in their teens were doing in the 1950’s, though the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s right until the present day.

This exhibition contains a number of different themes throughout the eras. Whether it is types of music they listened to or the different types of fashion that was available. There are original artefacts on showing what was available, from concert tickets to vinyl covers, and platform shoes to Walkmans. There will be something of interest for everyone.

The project, supported by Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots grant has given the dedicated team of young people from North Somerset a chance to learn skills and develop old ones. They have been busy recording oral histories collecting artefacts, designing exhibition posters and writing press releases. One of the team, Amy Nation, said, “Working on this exhibition has been a new experience. I have got to learn about a history I didn’t think I would ever learn about; it has taught me to be grateful for the things that I have in my life now.”

“Then and Now, Teens through the time warp” is on show in North Somerset Museum from 20 January to 15 September. The museum is in Burlington Street, Weston-super-Mare. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm. For further information please telephone 01934 621028 or visit the museum’s website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/museum.

I am a School Librarian at Kingsmead Technology College, Cannock, and I plan to run an event on Thursday, similar to Cambridge. An Improvised story telling session. The story will develop with each new storyteller. I may use props to get the ball rolling, so that the plot must incorporate each of the items.

So far it has been more boys than girls who have signed up.

Last year, all of our centres ran very successful National Storytelling Week events in local schools, and we plan to do the same in January/February 2007.   These activities involve some storytelling by our tutors, and also activities designed to get children to think about what makes a good story, be creative, and perform their own short story at the end (with funny voices/sound effects etc.)  Last year we gave the winning schools a selection of fiction books for their libraries, and are planning to do a similar thing this year.

The activities will be taking place across the country, including schools in Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Leicester, Peterborough and Reading.

Yours sincerely,
Heather Garrick

27th Jan - 7th Feb NINE NIGHTS - Stories from the RAMAYANA

Come and celebrate with us, as we light up the timeless and enduring world of the Ramayana with the flame of magical storytelling and the incense of music. Meet a magical eagle, the Golden Deer, an amazing flying monkey who shrinks and expands, the ghastly many-headed demon, and mythical warriors; visit a mirror palace under the sea, enchanted gardens, and a monumental bridge over the ocean between India and Sri Lanka….

Enchanting storyteller VAYU NAIDU re-imagines the great Asian epic of love, death, valour and struggle among the gods and heroes with flashes of wit and contemporary insight. Her unique blending of folk and tribal versions of this much-loved story creates a re-telling that will appeal to all ages, and across cultures. The spoken word is accompanied by a soundscape of percussion and exciting and exotic instruments. Come and celebrate with us the perennial victory of light over darkness!

Vayu is Artistic Director of Vayu Naidu Company, dedicated to new writing for theatre and performance storytelling in collaboration with musicians and composers. She explores the tools of verbal and physical language to create storytelling as performance and theatre. Vayu Naidu Company was set up by Vayu in 2001, and its inaugural performance South was both written and performed by her. She has continued to both write and perform to much acclaim in the company’s further productions Joining Forces, Licence to Tell and Nothing but the Salt (all directed by Chris Banfield).
